Let’s All Meet up in the Year 2000

Today I realized that it’s the end of a decade. When 2000 came, I was 18, with long blonde hair, and home for winter break. My parents had a huge Y2K party, and all of my high school friends and I sat for hours in their garage talking about our first few months of college and if the world would end at midnight.

it's me on SFstyle

In this short period of time I had my first kiss, found graphic design, drove a bus, created a zine, had my first fashion photo shoot, voted in my first election, graduated college, turned 21, drove with a packed car from Sacramento to Seattle, met and lost friends, got my first real job, lived by myself, started running, and traveled to London, Hawaii, and New York. In 2003, I embarked on a ten hour train ride to from New York City to Pittsburgh, PA, where I met Richard Wayne, learned how to use Photoshop, worked in San Francisco, learned some things the hard way, saw Morrissey three times, saw the Cure, dyed my hair black, started wearing high heels and red lipstick, got my first digital camera, started a website, learned about studio lighting, found a muse, and had my first art show. In this time my siblings grew up, I turned into a woman, became a photographer, unexpectedly found love, and moved across the country.

Behind the scenes

And these many moments, words, tastes, happiness, tears, and dreams are only what I remember. Now that we are starting a new decade, it’s time to make more memories.

Caitlin Shearer
“Of course she drank the poision.”, artwork by one of my favorites, Caitlin Shearer.

This morning I opened my eyes and Pittsburgh was covered in snow! The sidewalks, the cars, the tree branches – it all looked like a scene from Groundhog Day!

Groundhog Day

I think the snow is gorgeous to look at, but of course I am saying this from my cozy apartment, while poor Richard Wayne is outside scraping snow off his car.

Let it snow

How are you? I am enjoying learning about my new environment but really missing California and my family. How are you going to spend the holidays? One of the things from the internet that I have been enjoying lately is Regina, the jewelry designer behind Chain Chain Chained’s blog.

Finally able to take pictures again, this week I was really curious how to make my own bokeh and found this really easy to follow tutorial.

What I love the most about this time of year are the decorations and giving gifts to my nearest and dearest. I wish that I could reveal what I purchased for Richard Wayne, but let’s just say that this year, Etsy was a great gift resource!

Cherry oh, Cherry oh, baby

I also collaborated with Lindsay Jean, ModCloth fashion buyer and budding stylist, along with friend and model Bobbi Wall to create some gorgeous images. Can you believe that this was Bobbi’s first time in front of a camera?

I am anxious to focus on my photography again. There are some collaborations in the works, including an exciting identity redesign with graphic designer, fellow black and white lover, and snow white beauty, nubbytwiglet! Updates coming soon! Other than that, I am trying to stay positive and enjoy where I am.

Electronic Renaissance

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Lack of a computer and internet at home is forcing me to use actual pen and paper to write to you, dear readers, then transcribe it into this window at a later time. This Friday, November 13th (Friday the 13th, how appropriate) will be my one month anniversary of living in Pittsburgh, PA. So much has happened in a thirty day span – probably the most change I have ever lived through. I packed up my California life, gave some of it away, left bits at my parents house, then flew to Pittsburgh, where for two weeks I lived with Richard at his good friend Andrew’s house, which is also occupied by a handsome tuxedo cat, Sebastian. My first weekend there, I was invited to see an actual Steelers game with my friend Dona, from San Francisco, who is – coincidentally – also dating a guy named Richard from Pittsburgh! And then three days before we were to move to our new, cute apartment in another part of town called Lawrenceville, Andrew’s house was burglarized, and everything expensive and electronic that I own was stolen, including my brand new Canon 7D that I had in my hands for a total of five days.

We moved into our own place on Halloween, which was appropriately grey and raining. I spent that entire weekend unpacking boxes, cleaning, and trying to put things away with what little furniture and space that we have. Last week was a mix of emotions, as I feel like I am going through art withdrawal not being able to take photographs of my new life, or work on freelance design projects (there are a few that I have and want to work on!) The weather here has also been so unpredictable. During my first week here, high temperatures during the day were in the 40’s, and since then, it has been everything from overcast, sunny, rainy, warm, windy, to today when the temperature is supposed to climb to an unseasonably warm 72 degrees Fahrenheit!

On the bright side of things, though, I feel thankful that I am slowly starting to meet the great new connections that I need here, like becoming friends with a digital re-toucher and photographer, Erin Corbett, hair dresser Beth McHenry, who owns Evolve, a hair salon, and entrepreneur Alissa Martin, who owns Pavement, an adorable Lawrenceville neighborhood boutique, and for the fact that Andrew has insurance, which will help replace most items that I’ve lost. So, now I am trying to practice patience, which is very hard for a normally impatient person.

I apologize for lack of updates on this blog, but with so much change and not as much free internet time, it is difficult. Please be patient with us, and soon things will be back to normal with posting artist interviews, favorite finds, and photography.

PS. All of the electronic support that I have received on this space, through messages and letter, has has really been helping me cope. Thank you all so much for your continued love.

Men’s Style Spotlight: Jose Reyes

Monday, February 9th, 2009

I’ve only made about four or five friends in the Bay Area since moving here from Pittsburgh, PA a few months ago, and Jose Reyes is one of them.  I’d seen pictures of this early-twenty-something Hispanic guy prior to our meeting, and my first impression was that this guy must be a snotty little hipper-than-thou punk brat.  You know–one of those guys you love to hate, yet something inside of you secretly envies his youth, his full head of hair, his ability to be seemingly able to pull off any look with ease.

Then I met Jose and found that he is undeniably hip, undeniably youthful, and he undeniably possesses the kind of long, pin-straight, silken hair that women would kill for.   But it also turns out that Jose–or Kid Jeffrey Lee Congo Pierce-Powers, as I’ve affectionately nicknamed him–is a harmless pup with a good, warm heart beating in his chest.  We share a love of many bands and an affinity for turquoise jewelry.   I am happy then, that Jose–with idiosyncrasies in full effect–was willing to step into the Men’s Style Spotlight.

Describe your style in your own words.
The tribe.

Photobucket

What kinds of things influence your style? I’d say you have quite an LA glam/punk kind of look. Did the time you lived in LA have a big effect on you?
Haha. The LA glam scene is kinda of a joke, but thanks.  I can’t say LA influenced me a lot because a lot of the kids are into hair-metal and always hangout at the Rainbow or Whiskey.  It made me not want to be like them, so I guess it didn’t have any affect on my style.  As for music, I’d say a lot has attributed to my style, from bands like the Gun Club, the Joneses, the Dogs D’Amour, Hanoi Rocks, to more simple tastes like Gene Vincent, Chuck Berry, Little Richard.

Do you have any style icons?
Jeffrey Lee Pierce [of the Gun Club] and, ummm, Andy McCoy [of Hanoi Rocks].

There is often a social stigma placed on highly stylish men by ‘normal’ society that we must be weak, effeminate, or even homosexual. Have you run into this problem having long hair and dressing the way you do? If so, how have you dealt with or responded to this?

Hahaha, yeah many dudes yelling “fag!” I just ignore it until it gets serious, then I’m knockin’ heads. Just because I got style, have long hair, and wear jewelry don’t mean I can’t defend myself.

Photobucket

How do you find the things you wear? Do you shop mostly second-hand, for example?

Thrift stores, vintage stores, friends, friends of friends. Sometimes stealing came in to play, but that’s more how I was a few years ago.

Besides looking cool, what else is it that you do? Do you have any sort of fashion–or otherwise artistic–aspirations? You might have a promising future in a Gun Club cover band, ya know.
Playing music would be nice. [My past usage of] heroin blocked a lot of me wanting to do anything positive, so I’d say these days I would pick up the bass and jam with some cool cats. I’d say you and me have a good chance of starting up a Gun Club-sounding band. Or maybe I could so some modeling, but I doubt I’m good lookin’/skinny enough.

Photobucket

Speaking of Gun Club, can you make a list of your top five or so favorite bands?

The Gun Club
Sick Pleasure
Dogs D’Amour
The Joneses
198x

Do you pay attention to any fashion/style media to collect ideas?
Not really.

When did you start paying close attention to how you look? Has this current version of Jose been a long, slow evolution process, or have you gone through your share of fly-by-night fashion phases?
Maybe when I was, like, 11, I got into thug style. Haha. But yeah, that’s like the only over-night change. At 14, I was into punk and hardcore. At 16, I got into more old-school rock-n-roll, and I just slowly progressed, never making an over-night change. I hate that poser kids in LA will go clubbing all ghetto scene, then the next week they’re metal Motley Crue wannabes.

Photobucket

Do you have any final words, advice, philosophy, etc. you’d like to share?
What’s that smell? Smells like punk.

…And I imagine that smells a little something like B.O., hairspray, and spite all wrapped up and conveniently packaged in a studded leather jacket. Thanks, for the interview, Jose!

in honor of my grandmother’s passing, i am listening to flamingo’s radio on pandora radio, currently frank sinatra is spinning, which makes me think of her in the kitchen, singing, “i left my heart in san francisco-” which was her favorite old blue eyes tune-

since i am the graphic design girl in the family, i was given the job of creating her funeral program- which is both an honor and difficult- but it did allow me to scan a bunch of old grandma photographs, see below what a glamour darling she was and you can see where i get my tastes!

new york grandma

in the world of flickr, motionid inspires me daily- in which this week i photographed christopher salon with nothing but my 50mm lens and available light!

richie is talented

i miss my grandma, but i am happy that she can be in peace now, and i like to imagine death is like the end of the movie, “the big fish” and she can be young again, somewhere beautiful with my grandfather and all their friends, dancing to swing music, smoking a cigarette and wearing high heels. i will always love you grandma, you influenced me so much, every day when i get dressed i look at a photo i have of you as a young woman and try to emulate your style- thank you for giving me a love for all things classic and pretty.

Ruhe in Frieden liebe Oma, Ich liebe dich immer.

i hope everyone is enjoying their monday off and being productive, i am living in photo edit land, i have the hair salon shoot to finish, a wedding i photographed last weekend to look at, go go girls to do final tweaks to, and a jazz singer’s album design to finish, busy lady! (but that is how i like it) looking forward to a week of beginnings and new clarity. it’s time to live and create all these things i dream about.

xo.

the red verse poster design

last week i designed a poster for a small san francisco independent label, tricycle records and my friend alex’s band, the red verse, who soon will be releasing a new piece of musical art. i am excited for this event.

jessica-m is just an amazing artist and inspires me every day, italian vogue is my new favorite eye candy, a friend showed me that the cure greatest hits dvd has SECRET videos, including this one, which is one of my favorite cure videos ever- robert smith, palm trees, polar bears, and snow?  love.

i'm shifting focus

i decided to invest love in san francisco, i think it needs me. the sun has been shining, the moon full, i have been wearing little scarves, designing, plotting photo shoots, wearing high heels, dancing, meeting new fantastic faces, and being happy.  how are you?
