He Haul

Howdy, everyone! Richard Wayne here. Though I’m always behind the scenes of Hiss & Hearse, editing all the entries and cheering Kristin on, it’s been quite some time since I’ve posted things of male interest up in here. But lately I’ve been fortunate to wrangle up a few fashionable finds, so I figured it’d be nice to share them with you.

Cloth Logic (Tulle’s menswear line) had a big sale this month, and being that I’m never opposed to any opportunity to amplify my resemblance to Link Wray in this photo, I purchased, at a deep discount, the classic, black canvas trench I’m wearing in the photos below. Unfortunately, like the image of Link Wray on the beach, I’m standing amidst a blanket of frigid snow.

I’ve kinda got this thing for flashy shoes. Since most of my wardrobe is made up of neutrals, especially black, I like to give my outfits a pop of pizzaz with a bold pair of boots. A few weeks back, I decided to treat myself to a new pair since my grey cowboy kicks with the fancy silver toe and heel rands are about to kick the bucket. After searching the internet far and wide, I landed on the Giorgio Brutini website and purchased these slinky, snakeskin ankle boots.

I’m fortunate to be in a loving relationship with a lady who knows my style well. Part of my Valentine’s Day gift this year was this silver-chained, trinket necklace from Heresy Designs on Etsy that features an antler tip (don’t worry, dear animal-loving friends, I believe it’s faux), a crucifix, and a Mother Mary medallion. It’s a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. Just like me, I guess.

In the photo above, I’m also wearing a new black button down from H&M. It’s constructed of this very smooth, cotton-stretch material, and the buttons are concealed behind a subtly sleek, ribbon placket.

As a side note, I’d like to say that even though H&M is quite hit-or-miss as far as their inventory goes, I find their sizing to be reliably consistent, and that’s comforting. We were in a kind of rush to get out of the store, and this svelte shirt just kind of popped out at me on the rack as we made our way to the checkout counter. I grabbed the first small I saw, confident that trying it on was unnecessary. When I got home and buttoned it up, I discovered how right I was. Fits like a glove!

And finally, a couple of weeks ago, Kristin hepped me the blog of clothing retailer, 80’s Purple. In a recent entry, they featured a hair grooming product called “Grant’s Golden Brand Pomade.” I have been using pomade to style my hair since I can remember and have always been frustrated by either a deficiency in hold, a lack of luster, a greasiness that gunks up both pillowcases and pores alike, or the fact that it just plain won’t wash out. But this company boasts its hair treatment as having the tenacity it takes to keep up a coiffure, the ability to be re-styled for hours, and a water-based formula that washes out in the shower.

Well, two out of three ain’t bad. It sure does style and hold my hair well and washes out easily with water. But the claim that it allows re-styling is a load of crap. After a few minutes of saturation in my hair, it stiffens up as though I’ve applied hairspray. And unless you’re a masochist, trying to comb through that would not be fun. Now, I’d generally be willing to overlook this mild inconvenience, but at nearly $30 per 4 oz. container (including shipping), a product better deliver everything my ‘do demands!

That’s it for now, but keep your eyes peeled for a post about the very handsome, handmade, detective-style wallet holster Kristin gave me for Christmas (if we can ever figure out how to get a handle on the unctuousness of the leather – more to come about that). Stay warm!

ModCloth 70% OFF SALE!

First off, for a limited time, ModCloth is having a big “Cabin Fever Sale” in which selected items are 70% off! Go here and check out the goods.

Hopeless

Hopeless Lingerie is making affordable and beautiful silk bow headbands, which you can buy in various colors through their Etsy store.

Richard Wayne sent me a link to fashion site, 80s Purple and I was pleasantly surprised to recognize the work of an LA photographer that I admire, Julia Galdo!

Margot

Last weekend I had the pleasure to work with model Bobbi Wall and stylist Lindsay Williams for a Margot Tenenbaum-inspired photo shoot. Check out some of our images! It was probably the coldest weather I’ve ever photographed in, and the only fashion images I have with snow!

Nub Love

Other things that are making daily life happier: bi-weekly shipments of my favorite San Francisco treat, Blue Bottle Coffee; NubbyTwiglet’s Week In Pictures (who doesn’t adore a lady who has an affinity for taxidermy and wears stilettos at home?); beautiful letters, music, and cards sent from friends; my new houndstooth baby doll coat; and daydreams of an upcoming California visit.

Beautiful Losers

I know that I’m late on this, but I love the character of Vince Noir, played by Noel Felding, from the British comedy series The Mighty Boosh. I started watching Season 1 this weekend and am hooked because I want to see what he will wear next! Silver spandex, cowboy hats, furry boots, and the most perfect hair? My favorite scene so far is when Vince Noir paints a portrait of Bollo the gorilla dressed up as Julius Caesar, and then says that Bollo looks like a “naked, little squashed-up hairy boy.”

Low-fi living in a modern world?

A new Urban Outfitters contest asks you to send them three photographs that illustrate how you are living a low-fi lifestyle. Enter, and you could win a $300 UO gift card!

mk4

Recently I had the opportunity to watch a documentary called, “Beautiful Losers“. The films website says, “In the early 1990’s, a loose-knit group of like-minded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop, and graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led.” It stars a selection of the leaders of this movement, artists like Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen (whose colorful paintings I have seen on the streets of San Francisco’s Mission District), and others.

Kid

I am still trying to figure out how to live in snow and bitter chill. Basically, with the the “high” temperatures being in the 20s, I’m cold all the time. I thought that I could get away with protesting the snow and wearing heels all winter, but each time I set foot on the sidewalk, I feel like I have to really focus or else I’ll fall down! Fashionable ladies who live in the snow, please tell me your secrets! Kid Congo Powers tells us about his shopping habits and twenty-five pairs of shoes (including four pairs of slippers). here.

In memory of Rowland S. Howard’s recent death, here’s a song by the Birthday Party for you. It’s one that I can’t stop listening to on this grey, snowy Pittsburgh day“Shivers”.

It’s a High of 25 Degrees

Margot
Margot Tenenbaum is the inspiration for an upcoming photo shoot!

It’s a high of 25 degrees today in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! While I sit inside a warm office watching the snowflakes swirl and fall softly to the ground, I have some things to share with you, dear readers.

New Kristin Cofer Photography Identity

I couldn’t be more than pleased with the new black and white identity designed by my friend, the talented and darling, Miss Nubby Twiglet!

I came across the website of Austin-based freelance web designer and writer, Paige Maguire, called flux-rad.com, where she has some really great mixtapes available to download!

il_430xN.105642463

2009 was the year in which MadMen inspired me to start wearing pegnoirs to bed instead of pajamas, and in my searches for them, I came across this the pegnoir of my dreams.

Shae

Shae Acopian Detar always inspires me with her self portraits that she posts on her fashion blog, EverythingStyle.com. On Christmas Day, Richard Wayne’s mom gave me a fancy wireless remote, which means I have no excuse for not taking more photographs of my own face. Maybe this can be a goal for 2010?

Caitlin Shearer
“Of course she drank the poision.”, artwork by one of my favorites, Caitlin Shearer.

This morning I opened my eyes and Pittsburgh was covered in snow! The sidewalks, the cars, the tree branches – it all looked like a scene from Groundhog Day!

Groundhog Day

I think the snow is gorgeous to look at, but of course I am saying this from my cozy apartment, while poor Richard Wayne is outside scraping snow off his car.

Let it snow

How are you? I am enjoying learning about my new environment but really missing California and my family. How are you going to spend the holidays? One of the things from the internet that I have been enjoying lately is Regina, the jewelry designer behind Chain Chain Chained’s blog.

Finally able to take pictures again, this week I was really curious how to make my own bokeh and found this really easy to follow tutorial.

What I love the most about this time of year are the decorations and giving gifts to my nearest and dearest. I wish that I could reveal what I purchased for Richard Wayne, but let’s just say that this year, Etsy was a great gift resource!

Cherry oh, Cherry oh, baby

I also collaborated with Lindsay Jean, ModCloth fashion buyer and budding stylist, along with friend and model Bobbi Wall to create some gorgeous images. Can you believe that this was Bobbi’s first time in front of a camera?

I am anxious to focus on my photography again. There are some collaborations in the works, including an exciting identity redesign with graphic designer, fellow black and white lover, and snow white beauty, nubbytwiglet! Updates coming soon! Other than that, I am trying to stay positive and enjoy where I am.

The song “Pretty Girl” by Canadian band The White Wires. “Pretty girrrrrrl, baby baby be mineeeeee.” Just enough pop to get me through a grey Pittsburgh day.

Drooling over pretty shoes like these studded Jeffrey Campbells from ModCloth. Daydreaming about my first Pittsburgh photo shoot, which will be a collaboration with stylist Leanne Ford, check out her work, she is amazing.

Aphrodite Slim

There is a new gorgeous typeface on the scene, check out Aphrodite Slim. Isn’t it lovely? This just in from the 1890s, a great NY Times article on how victorian inspired fashion is making it’s appearance in menswear.

Tell me what is making you happy these days.

black like my heart

This weekend Richard and I move into our new, cute apartment in Lawrenceville, and I can’t wait to have a real routine again. Living out of a suitcase for almost a month is not the easiest thing. Also, with what happened this week, I want a brand new space. I am trying really hard to move on, but I just feel really bad about losing all of my work, fonts, design elements, mp3s, and all other things that I have been electronically collecting the last five-plus years.

4918_D

Some things that I’ve been looking at around here and want (besides my camera and computer), is this fucshia coat from FredFlare and these velvet boots from ModCloth. All the typography lovers who read this blog will also enjoy “Daily Drop Cap”, which is a blog by Brooklyn typographer and illustrator Jessica Hische, who designs a daily gorgeous drop cap!

Daily Drop Cap

Now that I have a real address again, I am going to subscribe to some new fashion magazines, and Lula is the first one on my list! I also am constantly on the search for cute dresses to wear to work and after, since people here really like their happy hours. One I have my eye on at the moment is the “Mod-est Dress” by Katherine McConnell.

F21 Friends & Family!

For three days only, F21 is having a FREE shipping promo! Use code F21FRIENDS to pay nothing to have your parcels posted to you. Since the weather in Pittsburgh is quickly changing, I have been on the search for long sleeve blazers and found two here! This velvet one and this tuxedo inspired blazer are my style and seem both work- and play-appropriate.

Tell me happy things! What have you been doing this week? What are you dreaming about? Wearing? Creating? I really can’t wait to start over again.

So Much to Love!

Erica Mix!

This week I received this mix CD, pictured above, in the mail from the darling, sweet Erica Wong. We were college roommates, design majors, and even both drove buses for our part-time jobs! I remember approaching Erica because she was wearing Converse sneakers and a cute, orange peacoat – she definitely seemed like a girl of my tastes!

Since parting ways after college, we have been able to remain friends through the internet, and recently we decided to be penpals! Erica was a college DJ and always has the best taste in music, and so this mix has been making my week.

Other gems this week include an adorable sideshow from (Inside A Black Apple), called
You’re the cream in my coffee. Her man must feel so lucky!

Jessica M

This last weekend, while I was in Sacramento, I decided to track down Jessica M, whom I’ve not seen in at least three years, and whose watercolor paintings I find absolutely awe-inspiring. I showed up at her house on Sunday evening, and she seemed completely shocked (in a good way I hope)! After iced Americanos, a delicious chocolate chip cookie, and much talking later, she left me with a lot of beautiful art and an introduction to this blog called Decade Diary!

Behind the scenes

Another great Sacramento find is the make-up artist Emily Hunt, who applied makeup for my shoot last weekend. Not only is she extremely talented, but she runs a really great beauty blog called The Emery Board.

Finally, I’ve found that there is a new free download from Urban Outfitters called LStn6, and if you use the same code (LStn6) at checkout, you’ll get 10% off anything on the site. Enjoy!

Hearts and Hearts: Pittsburgh Edition

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

The last few days, I’ve been in a love-induced state of bliss,  with my head in the clouds and my hand holding Richard Wayne’s hand, going here and there. This, I hope, explains the lack of regular updates.

Favorite places we have visited this week include:
coca cafe
Coca Coffee Lounge is a really adorable breakfast and brunch place located in a part of town called Lawrenceville, which everyone says is “up and coming.” Richard Wayne and I went here on my first day. He had this unique stuffed french toast [Richard says: It was herbed goat cheese-stuffed French toast], and I had a mushroom omelet. Scrumptious!
Pavement
Pavement is a shoe and clothing boutique, also in Lawrenceville. We went there to meet up with the adorable owner, Alissa, about future photo collaborations! The place sells shoes by many of my favorite brands: Pink Studio, Seychelles, and other indie designers. She also displays a white deer head, and the entire back wall is plastered in a black and white printed wallpaper (my heaven). [Richard says: While visiting Pavement, I purchased a really cool cuff bracelet made from a vintage tie, and it features a pearlized snap enclosure that reminds me of all those western shirts I collect. I've been wearing it every day since!]
round corner cantina
The Round Corner Cantina, right now, holds my title for favorite bar of Pittsburgh. It’s kind of 1970s meets old west themed, with delicious cocktails and amazing art deco wallpaper. Friday night, I met up with my Pittsburgh friends Eli and Sari (who stayed with me in California a month ago), and we had many cocktails, salsa, corn on the cob and conversation. [Richard says: The Cantina, as locals generally call it, makes probably the best taco I've eaten since moving back to Pittsburgh from California. Their drinks are pretty special, too, since they create their concoctions with fresh fruit juices. Oh, and they have a huge back yard where you can drink (and smoke) under the stars, giving the entire place the feel of a hip house party.]
The Pittsburgh Center for Complementary Health and Healing is where Richard and I got our massages on Saturday. They have you lie on a water-cushioned tables and are super sweet and accomodating. It was incredible and the best massage I’ve ever had.
winston
♥ Yesterday I finally got to visit the ModCloth offices while on my girl date with Lindsay Williams, who is a buyer there and also the lady behind the fashion blog, My Solitary Consignment. I got to meet the famous pug, Winston, and see where my honey goes to work every day! [Richard says: I've never seen Winston act with anyone else like he did with Kristin. Normally calm, cool, and reserved as he patrols the office, he ran up to her and jumped up on her lap as she knelt to pet him! I think Kristin really is an animal whisperer!]
Big Dog Coffee is where I sit and type to you now, dear readers. It’s an independent coffee house recommended to me by Eli and is in a part of town called the South Side Flats. I have already consumed one delicious, iced americano, a huge perfect homemade chocolate chip cookie (something I have been craving all week), and iced tea. I am patiently waiting for Richard Wayne to be finished with work so he can pick me up and we can attend one of the many Pittsburgh, “cookouts.” [Richard says: You say "barbeque," I say "cookout." Put it together, and you get "cookeque." I think I've just coined a new term that will join east coasters and west coasters in culinary harmony.]

I have two days left here, but things are falling into place. And for the sake of all the people who have been good to me here: Go Steelers? Though getting used to being in a city obsessed with their football team might take me a little more time, I am definitely not ready to throw in the Terrible Towel just yet! [Richard says: It's true. We would commit major felonies for our Steelers. Yes, OUR Steelers. When they lose (which isn't often), the next day in workplaces all across southwestern PA, workers are more disgruntled then they'd be if you were to take away their vacation days and benefits packages. Another interesting note: Pennsylvanians often refer to the place where they live simply as "PA". Do residents of other states refer to their homelands in a similarly abbreviated way?]

How is your week? Care to share with us your favorite spots where you live!

black like my heart

“I am far from perfect. But I will be perfect for that imperfect someone who is perfect for me.”
-Unkown

Hello and welcome to our space! Hiss and Hearse is quickly growing in readers and Mr. Hiss, and I would like to welcome you to our little home on the web. I have a lot of fun things to share with you this week. First, my dear friend Amber Mortensen, the darling behind PainfullyHip.com, has photographs featured in the latest issue of N.E.E.T. magazine! I’ve been trying to be noticed by the creator of N.E.E.T. for years, so I’m proud of Amber!

Mr. Hiss and I are huge Nick Cave fans, and you could say he had a big part in our getting together. I was pleasantly surprised, then, to see this well designed website of his newest book, “The Death of Bunny Munroe.” I am even more excited about the audio version. Imagine Nick Cave reading you a story in your very own home!

Home Sweet Home

My mind is focused on being with Mr. Hiss, so this gorgeous Home Sweet Home print by Seb Lester really caught my eye! In Seb’s words, “Home Sweet Home” is a “timeless adage that I wanted to interpret in a stylish and modern way.”

Caitlin Shearer

Check out Pocketto Magazine #7, featuring artwork by Australian illustrator Caitlin Shearer, who is the lovely lady behind the new Kristin Cofer Photography logo!

This is a magazine month, and to my pleasant surprise, my photographer pen-pal and friend, Chloe Aftel, has the cover photo of Cobie Smulders in the latest issue of Venus Magazine!

9-2jeffrey_campbell3
My Pittsburgh BFF, Lindsay Williams, and the Jeffrey Campbell banner!

I really enjoyed reading the Jeffrey Campbell interview over on the ModCloth blog. He is such an inspiring man!

Tell us things the amazing things you found this week! Please, please please!
